Mikono Yama-zakura is a designated natural monument located in the Mikos District of the Mikono Peninsula, Wakasa Town, Fukui Prefecture. The area features a vast expanse of mountain cherry blossoms covering an area of approximately 1 km east-to-west and 200 meters north-to-south. Known locally as 'Senbon-zakura' (Thousand Cherry Blossoms), the site is famous for its stunning scenery where the blossoms harmonize perfectly with the coastal views of Wakasa Bay.
The history of these mountain cherry blossoms dates back to around 1742 (the Kanpo era). Records indicate that they were planted as landmarks during land reclamation for Korobi (oil tree) fields, encouraged by the local domain. Beyond their natural beauty, these trees serve as a cultural heritage that tells the story of the region's historical development and land cultivation.
The greatest highlight is the sight of the mountain cherry blossoms blooming across a wide area. In spring, the light green peninsula is beautifully adorned with soft, pale pink blossoms. This unique landscape, where the calm sea of Wakasi Bay meets the delicate mountain cherries, is a sight found only in this region. For a truly unique perspective, it is possible to view the blossoms from the sea via a fishing boat, though this requires prior inquiry.
The peak season for the mountain cherry blossoms is primarily in April. It is most beautiful to visit when the soft colors of the blossoms harmonize with the gentle spring mist over the sea. While the natural landscape is visible year-round, the most dramatic change occurs during the spring blooming season.
In addition to walking through the natural scenery, you can experience the landscape from the ocean. To view the blossoms from a fishing boat, you must contact local providers in advance. This allows for a profound connection with the changing seasons and the natural environment.
