A major highlight is the opportunity to witness the traditional Japanese coastal culture through live demonstrations by Ama divers.
This island has played an extremely important role in the history of cultured pearls. Thanks to the achievements of Kokichi Mikimoto, who dedicated himself to the development of cultured pearls, pearl culture spread across the globe. A statue of Kokichi Mikimoto stands on the island, serving as a significant landmark that tells the story of this history. It is not just a tourist facility, but a place of high cultural value where Japan's modern industrial development meets the ancient traditions of the Ama divers.
One of the greatest attractions is the demonstration by Ama divers dressed in traditional white 'isozoku' attire. This reenactment of the work once performed by Ama divers—who cared for Akoya shells to cultivate pearls—allows visitors to visually enjoy the traditional seaside lifestyle of Japan. Additionally, there are programs to deepen your knowledge of pearl manufacturing and exhibitions of pearl crafts. The island also features shopping areas and dining spots, allowing you to fully enjoy the island's natural beauty alongside your pearl-related memories.
Since operating hours for Mikimoto Pearl Island vary by season, it is highly recommended to check in advance. For example, during the year-end and New Year period, the closing time changes: from December 24th to 31st, it closes at 17:00, and from January 1st to 4th, it closes at 17:30. Enjoying the sparkling beauty of pearls alongside the seasonal sea views is a special experience. The Ama demonstrations, in particular, offer a precious chance to feel the traditional atmosphere of Japan.
Beyond viewing exhibitions to deepen your pearl knowledge, you can enjoy shopping for pearl products and dining on fresh seafood. A fun little activity is searching for the 'Love-Love Stone,' a heart-shaped stone hidden near the Kokichi Mikimoto statue within the sago palm greenery. You can experience the history of pearls and feel Japan's culture through all five senses amidst beautiful nature.
Mikimoto Pearl Island is a major sightseeing spot in the Ise-Shima area. Nearby, you can visit the Toba Aquarium to learn about marine life alongside the history of pearls. It is also easily accessible from Ise Grand Shrine, making it a perfect addition to an Ise-Toba-Shima sightseeing route. The surrounding area features beautiful coastlines, making it ideal for a combined driving or cruise tour.
As the island is a natural coastal environment, please wear comfortable clothing suitable for walking.
