Located in Ochi Town, Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, Mikari Falls is a highly famous waterfall selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls. The site is characterized by the striking sight of white water cascading down the rock face, surrounded by lush, vibrant greenery. The 'Mikari Falls Hydrangea Festival,' held from early to late June, attracts many domestic and international tourists. During this period, a wide variety of hydrangeas are planted around the falls, allowing visitors to enjoy the simultaneous beauty of natural geological formations and colorful floral displays.
The name 'Mikari' carries the poetic meaning of 'wanting to turn back and look many times,' suggesting a charm so profound that one wishes to revisit the spot repeatedly. The area is well-maintained as a public park, serving as a precious space where local residents and tourists can connect with nature. Being selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls, it holds significant cultural value as a symbol of Japan's natural beauty.
The greatest attraction is the dynamic interplay between the powerful waterfall and the hydrangeas. In June, approximately 40,000 hydrangeas of 50 different varieties—in shades of blue, pink, and purple—decorate the surroundings. Well-maintained walkways near the base of the falls allow you to feel the intensity of the water from various angles. On sunny days, you may even witness rainbows created by the reflection of sunlight through the mist, offering a once-in-a-lifetime natural spectacle.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, deep greenery in summer, and autumn foliage in fall. The absolute best time to visit is during the 'Hydrangea Festival' in June. During this time, evening light-ups are often held, allowing you to witness a more mystical and ethereal version of the falls. Light-ups generally occur between May and September, typically from 7:20 PM to around 10:00 PM.
Visitors can enjoy hiking along the well-maintained paths surrounding the falls, immersing themselves in the sounds and air of the natural environment. The site is excellent for photography, as you can capture the powerful water flow from various vantage points, such as the bridge or the paths near the basin. It is an ideal destination for plant observation or simply refreshing your mind in nature.
The area around the falls is rich in nature and can be easily integrated into a larger Karatsu sightseeing itinerary. Nearby, you can find various spots known as natural oases and facilities where you can experience local food culture. Exploring local delicacies like 'Ika Shumai' (squid dumplings), a specialty of Karatsu, at nearby shops or restaurants is a wonderful way to enhance your trip.
Preparation is key for a comfortable visit. Since you will be walking from the parking area toward the falls, please wear comfortable walking shoes.
