The MIHO MUSEUM is a world-class museum designed by the legendary architect I.M. Pei, nestled in the mountains of Koka City, Shiga Prefecture. Based on the collection of Mihiko Miho, it showcases precious artifacts from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Asia. The space, where architecture, nature, and art become one, offers visitors a truly extraordinary and spiritual experience.
Opened in 1997, the museum is built upon the concept of the 'Trinity of Architecture, Nature, and Art.' Following I.M. Pei's design philosophy, the structure is harmoniously integrated into the surrounding natural environment. The collection serves as a vital bridge to human history, preserving the treasures of ancient civilizations and the cultural evolution of mankind.
The most iconic feature is the mystical approach leading from the entrance to the main museum building. Passing through the tunnel and crossing the bridge is a piece of art in itself, creating a sense of transition from the mundane to the sublime. Inside, you will find exquisite Asian art and the golden stories of ancient civilizations. The building itself is a masterpiece, and the surrounding landscape changes beautifully with each season, offering a unique view every time you visit.
The museum operates on a seasonal schedule. Spring (cherry blossom season) and Autumn (foliage season) are the most spectacular times to visit, as the harmony between the architecture and nature is at its peak. The experience of walking through the 'tunnel of cherry blossoms' in spring is particularly popular. Opening hours are generally from 10:00 to 17:00, but please check the official schedule before visiting, as the museum may close for maintenance or exhibition changes.
Beyond viewing art, you can enjoy a relaxing break at the onsite cafe, 'Pine View,' while gazing at the breathtaking scenery. As the museum is located in a mountainous area, it is surrounded by rich natural beauty. There are also several golf courses in the vicinity, making it a great area for nature-based relaxation.
Access to the museum is via bus or car. Since it is located in a mountainous region, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. It is highly recommended to leave large bags or valuables in the cloakroom. Regarding payment, please confirm the availability of cash or credit cards at the reception. To protect the precious exhibits, please strictly follow all photography rules and maintain a quiet atmosphere within the museum.
