Mihamaen is a traditional Japanese garden situated within Makuhari Seaside Park in Mihama-ku, Chiba City. Opened on June 15, 1990, the garden is designed as a 'stroll garden' centered around a large pond. The landscape is meticulously crafted to represent mountains, rivers, the sea, and forests, providing a sense of natural harmony. A highlight of the garden is the 'Shoraitei' teahouse, built in the traditional Sukiya architectural style using Kitayama cedar. This allows visitors to appreciate the seamless integration of traditional Japanese architecture and landscape design.
The garden was developed as part of the urban greening efforts for the Makuhari New City area, serving as a sanctuary of nature and culture. Since its opening in 1990, it has functioned as a vital green space within the urban environment. The Shoraitei teahouse showcases the elegance of the Sukiya style, a traditional architectural method that emphasizes harmony between the building and its surroundings. The garden also played a role in the regional environmental preservation as part of the Makuhari Seaside Park, which hosted the National Urban Greening Fair in 1995.
The centerpiece of the garden is the expansive central pond, where many koi fish swim gracefully, offering a peaceful sight for visitors. The Shoraitei teahouse is another essential attraction, showcasing the refined beauty of Sukiya-style architecture. The way the building blends with the garden scenery is a testament to traditional Japanese design. As you walk along the paths surrounding the pond, you can enjoy a landscape that mimics natural terrain, providing a deep sense of tranquility.
Mihamaen is open year-round. The daytime is the best time to observe the movement of the koi and the intricate details of the teahouse architecture. The garden is open until 17:00, with the last entry at 16:30. If you wish to enjoy matcha tea at the teahouse, service is available from 9:00 to 16:30. Please note that the tea service is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan your visit accordingly to ensure you can enjoy the tea experience.
Visitors can enjoy feeding the koi fish in the pond for a fee of 100 JPY. For a more formal cultural experience, you can enjoy matcha green tea and seasonal Japanese sweets at the Shoraitei teahouse. The tea set costs 900 JPY per person and includes seating for up to 24 people in a beautiful, traditional atmosphere. Remember that the teahouse is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Mihamaen is located within Makuhari Seaside Park (Block C). The surrounding area is home to major landmarks such as ZOZO Marine Stadium (Chiba Marine Stadium), the Takayanomiya Memorial JFA Dream Field, and Makuhari Messe. It is also conveniently located within walking distance from Kaihimmakuhari Station, placing it near the Makuhari New City area filled with hotels and shopping facilities.
While the garden paths are easy to walk, we recommend wearing comfortable shoes suitable for strolling through a garden. Please carry cash (Japanese Yen) for admission, koi food, or the matcha tea set. Note that the tea service is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and operating hours for the teahouse may change due to private bookings. The garden is a non-smoking area, and outside food or delivery services are not permitted within the garden.
