Mihama Cape (Mihama Misaki) is a scenic sand spit located in Toda, Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, stretching out into Suruga Bay. This cape is characterized by its beautiful coastline and rich natural environment, offering a rare combination of unique geological formations and precious vegetation, including areas designated as natural monuments. The surrounding area is developed as Mihama Cape Park, allowing visitors to enjoy the artistic beauty of nature alongside sweeping ocean views.
The area has a long history of living in harmony with nature. At the tip of the cape sits Moroguchi Shrine, which enshrines the deity Ototachibana-hime no Mikoto, a goddess revered for ensuring bountiful catches and safety at sea. The cape also features a grove of Inumaki trees that preserve the remnants of a subtropical evergreen forest; due to its rarity, this area was designated as a natural monument by Shizuoka Prefecture on November 28, 1980. Additionally, the area is home to famous historic pine trees, such as the 'Negori-no-matsu' and 'Yuai-no-matsu,' which carry significant local history.
Mihama Cape offers many attractions from both natural and cultural perspectives. First, the Moroguchi Shrine at the tip of the cape is an important site for praying for maritime safety. Second, the Inumaki grove provides a rare and precious landscape found nowhere else. Visitors can also learn about local history and marine ecosystems at the nearby Numazu City Toda Shipbuilding Museum and the Suruga Bay Deep Sea Life Museum. Furthermore, the 'Kenko-no-Mori' (Forest of Health) on the southern slope features an observation deck where you can witness the majestic silhouette of Mount Fuji alongside the entire cape.
Mihama Cape shows different faces throughout the seasons. During the summer months, the sandy areas near the port become lively with beachgoers enjoying various sea activities. Since views of Mount Fuji are expected year-round, we highly recommend visiting on clear, sunny days or during times when the air is particularly crisp. Visiting the shrine and park during bright daylight hours allows you to experience the vivid colors of the sea and the surrounding nature more intensely.
