Mifuneyama Rakuen is a magnificent garden spanning approximately 500,000 square meters at the western foot of Mt. Mifune in Takeo, Saga Prefecture. Its scenery is so breathtaking it is often compared to traditional Chinese landscape paintings. Set against the dramatic cliffs of Mt. Mifune, the garden offers a different face each season: vibrant cherry blossoms and azaleas in spring, and brilliant autumn colors in the fall. This historic site is a premier Japanese garden where natural beauty and masterful landscaping techniques blend seamlessly.
The garden's history dates back to the 28th lord of the Takeo domain, Nabeshima Shigeyoshi, who spent approximately three years cultivating this space as a private villa. Due to its unique shape, Mt. Mifune has long been called 'Tosen-zan' (Chinese Ship Mountain). Today, the site is a registered national monument, preserving its cultural value and the harmonious relationship between man-made landscaping and natural topography.
The greatest draw is the dynamic landscape framed by the sheer cliffs of Mt. Mifune. In spring, the sight of 2,000 cherry trees and 200,000 azaleas creates a sea of color. In autumn, the area around the ponds and mountain foothills is painted with the colors of maple leaves, including a famous 170-year-old maple tree. Key spots like 'Tsutsuji-dani' (Azalea Valley) and 'Furimuki-zaka' offer different perspectives of the garden's beauty. Recently, the garden has gained international fame for its collaboration with digital art, offering mystical night-time illuminations that transform the landscape into a dreamlike art space.
The best time to visit depends on your interests. Visit from March to May to witness the explosion of life with cherry blossoms and azaleas. From October to November, the mountains are draped in rich autumn colors, offering a more serene atmosphere. For daytime visitors, the natural colors are striking, while for night-time visitors, the light shows create a surreal world of light and shadow. Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls through the vast grounds, walking around the ponds to see the reflection of the mountains in the water. Traditional tea houses also allow you to relax while gazing at the scenery. In recent years, the garden has hosted immersive digital art exhibitions like 'teamLab: Whereabouts of the Gods,' blending nature with cutting-edge technology. Please note that for the protection of the landscape, activities such as rock climbing or mountain climbing are strictly prohibited.

The nearby Takeo Onsen area is also a famous hot spring destination, making it a perfect route to combine garden sightseeing with a relaxing hot spring soak.
Because the garden is vast and includes unpaved paths and slopes, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please dress appropriately for the season. While credit cards and IC cards may be accepted at certain locations, it is wise to carry cash for smaller shops or stalls. English-language signage and staff support are limited, except during major events. To protect the natural environment, entering restricted areas or attempting to climb the cliffs is strictly forbidden.
