The Mie Prefectural Museum (affectionately known as 'MieMu') is a public museum dedicated to showcasing the diverse charms of Mie Prefecture, focusing on its nature, history, and culture. Located adjacent to the Mie Prefectural Cultural Center in the outskirts of Tsu City, this vast facility spans three floors with a total floor area of 10,800 m². The predecessor to the current museum was a historic institution established in 1953. The former museum focused heavily on natural sciences and historical archaeology, researching the rich natural history and marine biology of the region. Due to challenges regarding aging infrastructure and seismic standards, the exhibition rooms were closed in 2007. Following a comprehensive modernization project, the museum reopened on April 19, 2014, under its current name, 'Mie Prefectural Museum (MieMu).' This rebirth was the result of deep community discussions on how to best preserve and evolve local culture for the modern era.
