Michi-no-Eki Shirataka Yana Park (also known as 'Mogami River Ayu Utopia') is a roadside station located along Route 287 in Shirataka Town, Yamagata Prefecture, near the beautiful Mogami River. The most distinctive feature of this facility is the permanent 'Tourist Yana' site, which visitors can observe freely. A 'Yana' is a traditional fishing structure used to catch Ayu (sweetfish) by utilizing the river's current. Here, you can enjoy gourmet food featuring the star of the region—Ayu caught in the pristine waters of the Mogami River—alongside fresh local agricultural products. Shirataka Town has a long history of 'Yana' fishing. In the early Showa era, there were three such fishing sites in the town, but the tradition nearly vanished due to changes in the post-war era. However, driven by a strong desire from local residents to preserve the tradition and share the joy of Shirataka's Ayu with more people, a restoration project was launched. Led by Shirataka Kanko Kaihatsu Co., Ltd., involving the cooperation of approximately 200 local residents, the traditional Yana fishing method was successfully revived. Today, the facility serves as a vital hub for preserving and passing down local culinary culture to the next generation, attracting many visitors from both within and outside the prefecture.
The greatest charm of this location is the opportunity to observe the Yana in action, catching fish within the river's flow. Seeing this traditional fishing method, which utilizes the natural topography, is a unique experience found only here. Additionally, the adjacent 'Ayu Chaya' restaurant serves dishes made with fresh Ayu. The local specialties, such as 'Ayu no Shioyaki' (salt-grilled sweetfish) and 'Tofu Dengaku' (miso-glazed tofu), which highlight the natural flavors of the ingredients, are highly recommended. Furthermore, during the seasonal 'Yana Opening Festival,' you can enjoy the traditional Japanese sight of approximately 150 Koinobori (carp streamers) dancing in the wind above the Mogami River.
Michi-no-Eki Shirataka Yana Park reveals different beautiful faces throughout the seasons. In spring (late April to early May), many Koinobori are displayed for the festival, and you can enjoy the nearby 'Shirataka Sakura Corridor,' a famous spot for cherry blossoms. From summer to autumn, the menu becomes even more abundant with mouth-watering dishes featuring seasonal Ayu. Additionally, in mid-June, the 'Satsuki Exhibition' is held by local enthusiasts. As the entire Shiraka Town is known as a 'Village of Classical Cherry Blossoms,' we recommend exploring the surrounding area to see the centuries-old cherry trees scattered throughout the town.
