Metasequoia Namiki is a spectacular 2.4km avenue located in Makino Town, Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture. The path is characterized by approximately 500 Metasequoia trees standing in perfect order on both sides, creating a harmonious landscape with the distant view of Mt. Nosaka. This avenue serves as a beautiful approach road leading toward the Makino Highland area. Because the scenery changes drastically with each season, every visit offers a completely new and breathtaking experience.
The history of this avenue began with the fruit producers of the Makino area. The trees were originally planted as part of a school farm development project titled "Learning from Makino's Soil." Since then, the community has carefully nurtured the trees, and the avenue has been extended alongside the development of the prefectural road to reach its current magnificent form. The Metasequoia is a deciduous conifer native to China, named for its resemblance to the giant Sequoia trees.

The greatest charm of this location is the shifting color palette of the Metasequoia trees. In spring, the fresh, bright green buds create a refreshing atmosphere. In summer, the deep green canopy provides cool shade for visitors. Autumn is the most popular season, as the trees transform into a stunning tunnel of golden yellow and orange foliage. In winter, the avenue is draped in white snow, offering a quiet and ethereal landscape that is truly magical.
Spring (April–May): Enjoy the refreshing feeling of new greenery budding. Summer (June–August): A great time to enjoy the deep green shade and cooler temperatures. Autumn (Mid-November–Early December): This is the peak season for golden foliage and is highly recommended for photographers. Winter (January–February): Experience a mystical and serene landscape covered in snow. To avoid crowds, it is highly recommended to visit on weekday mornings.

Near the avenue, you can enjoy seasonal fruit picking at the "Makino Pickland Agricultural Park." The surrounding area also features various restaurants serving local ingredients and cozy cafes where you can relax while enjoying the view. Whether you are here for a scenic drive, a peaceful walk, or a culinary experience with seasonal fruits, the natural beauty of this area will leave a lasting impression.
In addition to the Metasequoia Avenue, the nearby Makino Highland and Makino Pickland Agricultural Park are popular destinations. There are also local hot spring (onsen) facilities in the vicinity, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in a relaxing nature-filled stay. While driving is the most convenient way to reach the area, access via public transportation is also possible.

If visiting in winter, please prepare non-slip footwear to navigate snowy or icy paths safely. As the avenue is located near residential areas, please drive slowly and be mindful of local residents. Parking is available at the Makino Pickland facility. When taking photographs, please ensure you do not obstruct passing vehicles or other pedestrians to maintain safety and courtesy.
