Located in the center of Tonosho Town on Shodoshima Island, the "Maze Town" is an area characterized by its incredibly complex and winding alleys. This unique architectural layout is said to have been intentionally designed to protect the local residents from pirate attacks in centuries past. Walking through these labyrinthine paths offers a deeply immersive experience, allowing visitors to feel the weight of history with every turn.
The origins of these intricate alleys lie in the necessity of defense. During the Nanboku-cho period, when Sasaki Nobutane established a base in the area, the region faced frequent conflicts with forces from the Northern Court. To defend against invaders, the streets were intentionally constructed to be narrow and confusing, creating a natural defense system. This type of layout is extremely rare in modern Japan, making it a significant historical site.
The area is dotted with several significant historical buildings and cultural institutions. A major landmark is Saiko-ji Temple, the 58th temple of the Shodoshima 88-Temple Pilgrimage. Additionally, the Ozaki Hozai Memorial Museum, dedicated to the famous poet, offers a deeper look into the island's rich literary and cultural heritage. These sites are essential stops located just beyond the winding paths of the maze.
Since the Maze Town consists of public alleys and walking paths, there are no official closing times, allowing you to explore at any time. Visiting during daylight hours is highly recommended, as the bright sun makes the intricate structure of the alleys and the details of the old buildings much easier to observe. While the area is enjoyable year-round, please be mindful of the sun during midday strolls.
The true joy of this area is the experience of "getting lost." Instead of following a strict map, try wandering through the complex paths to discover unexpected views and the fine details of the historic architecture. You can easily combine this visit with other famous Shodoshima spots, such as the world's narrowest strait (the Dorobuchi Strait) or the romantic Angel Road, to create a full day of exploration.
The Maze Town is a perfect addition to a major Shodoshima sightseeing itinerary. For example, it is approximately a 15-minute drive from the Nakayama Senmai-da (famous terraced rice fields) and is part of the general route including the Dorobuchi Strait. Access from Tonosho Port is very convenient via the Shodoshima Olive Bus service.
Because the alleys are narrow and often have uneven surfaces, wearing comfortable walking shoes is essential. Please remember that this is a residential area; respect the privacy of the locals. When taking photographs, avoid filming into private homes or capturing personal lives to maintain local etiquette.
