The Meiji 100th Anniversary Observation Tower is a landmark located at the very tip of Futtsu Cape in Futtsu City, Chifa Prefecture. Completed in 1971, the tower features a distinctive architectural design inspired by the Japanese five-needle pine (Goyomatsu). The observation deck reaches a height of 21.8 meters, providing a spectacular vantage point. Situated within Futtsu Park, the structure harmonizes beautifully with the surrounding natural environment. It is widely recognized as a premier spot for enjoying the panoramic views of Tokyo Bay and has been selected as one of the '100 Best Views of Mt. Fuji in the Kanto Region.'
The area around Futtsu Cape holds significant historical value, having served as a strategic coastal defense area during the Meiji and Taisho eras, featuring fortifications such as the First and Second Sea Forts. While the observation tower itself is a more modern structure completed in 1971, it stands as a symbol of the region's connection to its maritime history. The choice of the five-needle pine as a design motif reflects the local natural heritage and the enduring spirit of the coastal landscape.
The greatest attraction is the unobstructed view from the 21.8m high observation deck. Visitors can witness the vast horizon of Tokyo Bay, the intricate coastline of the Boso Peninsula, and the unique topography of the region. On days with high visibility and clear skies, the majestic silhouette of Mt. Fuji can be seen clearly in the distance. The surrounding area is lush with pine trees and coastal vegetation, offering a serene atmosphere where the sea and land meet.
The best months to visit are May, July, and August. During these periods, especially on clear days, the chances of spotting Mt. Fuji are significantly higher. The tower also offers a beautiful experience during sunset; watching the sky change colors over the ocean is a highlight for many visitors. Whether you visit during the bright daylight hours or the golden hour of evening, the shifting light provides a different perspective of the landscape.
The 360-degree open view from the deck allows for a complete observation of the surrounding sea and landforms. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll through Futtsu Park alongside the tower. Additionally, the adjacent coastal area is a hub for marine leisure; for example, between May 1st and August 31st, the area is often used for jet ski activities, adding a sense of dynamic energy to the scenic surroundings.
Inside Futtsu Park, you will find various other facilities such as the Nakanoshima Observation Tower (located on a hill surrounded by a pond), an outdoor theater, and multi-purpose sports grounds. The tip of Futtsu Cape is well-equipped with parking areas, making it easily accessible by car. The entire area is a wonderful destination for those looking to immerse themselves in nature and coastal scenery.
As the tower is located on a coastal cape, it can be quite windy. We recommend bringing a light jacket or wearing clothing suitable for windy coastal weather. When driving, please use the Futts third parking lot; please note that there may be restrictions for large buses, so check in advance if traveling by coach. To protect the local environment, please strictly follow the rules regarding coastal preservation and refrain from driving vehicles onto the beach or near protected plant habitats.
