Mayo Terrace is a specialized facility located in Chofu, Tokyo, dedicated to the world of Kewpie mayonnaise. The center focuses on the history of mayonnaise, the secrets behind its delicious taste, and the concept of 'Shokuiku' (food education). One of the most striking features is the dome-shaped building designed to resemble a classic Kewpie mayonnaise bottle, creating a visually captivating space. It offers an immersive experience where visitors can gain a deeper appreciation for a condiment that is a staple in Japanese households.
This facility was established based on Kewpie's philosophy of food culture and food education. Its mission is to convey, through hands-on experiences, how a common condiment like mayonnaise was developed and how it has evolved over time. It serves as a hub for deepening understanding of the role mayonnaise plays in Japanese culinary culture and the importance of a healthy relationship with food.
The facility features several distinctive areas. First, the Kewpie Gallery introduces the history of mayonnaise and various menu ideas using the product. The most iconic area is the 'Mayo Dome,' a warm, wooden-textured building modeled after the actual Kewpie Mayonnaise (450g) bottle. Here, visitors can learn about the craftsmanship and scientific secrets behind the product's texture and flavor. The interior design is also playful, featuring unique items such as sofas shaped like vegetables, making the experience even more delightful.
Mayo Terrace operates during two main sessions: 10:00–12:00 and 13:00–16:30. While there are no specific seasonal restrictions, it is crucial to check the schedule in advance because the facility is strictly reservation-only. It is generally best to visit during daylight hours to fully enjoy the colorful exhibits and the atmosphere inside the dome.
Visitors can engage in various exhibits designed to deepen their knowledge of food and nutrition. From learning about the history of mayonnaise in the gallery to exploring the structural secrets of the product within the dome, the facility provides a comprehensive educational journey. It is more than just a tour; it is a program designed to spark interest in food culture and nutrition.
