Matsue Castle is a designated National Treasure located in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. It is one of the twelve original castle keeps still standing in Japan, easily recognized by the beautiful contrast between its black-lacquered plaster and white walls. The castle tower, rising majestically above massive stone walls, serves as a precious architectural testament to the Edo period.
Constructed during the Edo period, the castle's main keep was officially designated as a National Treasure in 2015. It has long served as a vital historical stronghold for the region. The surrounding area is rich in culture, with nearby facilities like the Matsue Museum of History helping to preserve and showcase the local heritage.

The scenery of Matsue Castle changes beautifully depending on the season and time of day. The castle tower's entrance hours are 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM from April to September, and 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM from October to March. The Honmaru area (grounds) is open from 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM (April–Sept) or 5:30 PM (Oct–March). Visitors can enjoy the cherry blossoms in spring and the shifting light and colors during summer and autumn.
Visitors can experience the interior of a traditional Japanese castle by climbing the keep. Please note that upon entering, you must remove your shoes and place them in a provided shoe bag. Beyond the castle, the surrounding area offers a rich historical atmosphere, including the Matsue Museum of History and the scenic Horikawa sightseeing boat tours, which allow you to view the castle from the water.
The area around Matsue Castle is dotted with cultural landmarks. The Matsue Museum of History provides deeper insight into local history, making it a perfect companion visit. Additionally, the Horikawa sightseeing boat offers a unique perspective of the castle walls from the water. When entering the castle tower, you are required to remove your shoes and carry them in a shoe bag. We recommend wearing easy-to-remove footwear and bringing socks for comfort. Because the interior features steep stairs and uneven surfaces, please wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes for the walk around the grounds.
