Matabee Sakura (also known as Hongo no Takizakura) is a legendary single weeping cherry tree located in Ouda-hon-go, Uda City, Nara Prefecture. With an estimated age of approximately 300 years, this massive tree stands about 13 meters tall with a trunk circumference exceeding 3 meters. Its sprawling branches create a magnificent canopy of pale pink blossoms in the spring, offering a sense of overwhelming presence that draws visitors from far and wide.
The tree is named after the legend of the Sengoku-period samurai, Goto Matabee (also known as Goto Mototsugu). It is said that after the fall of the Toyotomi clan during the Siege of Osaka, Goto Mototsugu lived in the Ouda area of present-day Uda City. The tree stands on the former site of the Goto family residence. Because of this deep historical connection, the tree is not just a natural wonder but a cherished symbol of the region's history. It gained wider fame after being featured in the opening sequence of the 2000 NHK Taiga Drama, '葵 徳川三代' (Aoi: Tokukawa Sandai).
The most striking feature is the scale of the weeping cherry tree. As the branches cascade toward the ground, they create a shape reminiscent of a waterfall (hence the name 'Takizakura' or 'Waterfall Cherry'). During the peak bloom in spring, the dense clusters of pale pink flowers create a breathtaking view. During the annual 'Sakura Festival,' special night-time illuminations are held. The sight of the illuminated blossoms glowing against the dark night sky offers a completely different, mystical atmosphere compared to daytime viewing.
The peak viewing season is typically from late March to early April. During this window, the blossoms reach full bloom. We highly recommend visiting during the evening when the light-up events occur, as the illuminated branches provide a stunning visual experience. Since blooming dates can vary each year due to weather, it is recommended to check official local information or weather reports before your visit.
