Marunuma Kogen Ski Resort, located in Katashima Village, Gunma Prefecture, is one of the most prestigious ski resorts in the Kanto region, boasting high altitude and an exceptionally long operating season. Situated near the 2,000m mark on the slopes of Mt. Nikko Shirane, the resort maintains excellent snow quality due to its high elevation.
The standout feature is its vast terrain and extended season, typically running from late November to early May, making it one of the earliest opening resorts in the Kanto area. The upper sections feature challenging courses for intermediate and advanced skiers, perfect for long rides and terrain play. Additionally, the summit provides a spectacular vantage point to view famous peaks of the Joshin'etsu region, including Mt. Asama, Mt. Kusatsu-Shirane, Mt. Tanigawa, Mt. Boso, and Mt. Shibutsu.
Managed by the Nippon Paper Group, Marunuma Kogen has a long-standing history in the region. While it once had a culture more centered on traditional skiing, it has evolved into a diverse winter sports hub where snowboarding is fully welcomed across all courses. The resort is deeply integrated into the local community and focuses on nurturing the next generation of athletes through programs like the NSD Kids Program and the installation of specialized snow parks.
The resort is divided into three main areas: the Summit, Mid-mountain, and Base areas.
The best season for stable snow is from December to April.
Standard operating hours are 8:30 to 16:30, but please note that hours may end at 16:00 during specific periods (e.g., until Jan 9 or between April 6–May 6). Night skiing is only available during specific events.
