Marugami Falls is located at the foot of Mount Ryogami in Ogamino Town, Chichibu District, Saitama Prefecture. Its most striking feature is its dynamic three-tiered structure. With a total vertical drop of approximately 76 meters, it is a site of significant historical value, being the only waterfall in Saitama Prefecture to be selected as one of the 'Top 100 Waterfalls of Japan.' Its breathtaking scenery has been recorded in the 'Shinpen Musashi Fudoki Ko,' a historical document from the late Edo period, attracting visitors for centuries. The falls are nestled within the lush natural environment of Mount Ryogami, creating a unique landscape shaped by the surrounding topography.
The beauty of this area has been documented since the late Edo period (1804–1830) in the 'Shinpen Musashi Fudoki Ko.' Furthermore, Mount Ryogami, which stands behind the falls, has long been revered as a sacred site for mountain worship. During the Edo period, it served as a center for Shugendo (ascetic training), drawing many practitioners from across the country. Geologically, the area is also highly significant, serving as an important geosite for understanding the formation of the local terrain and the natural processes of the earth.
The waterfall consists of three distinct tiers, each offering a different visual expression. The first tier has a 12m drop, the second 14m, and the third—the most spectacular part—boasts a massive 50m drop. The backdrop of Mount Ryogami is composed of a massive rock body of chert. This chert contains fossils of radiolaria from the Permian to Jurassic periods and is highly resistant to erosion, which has resulted in the mountain's distinctive, saw-toothed silhouette. This harmony of topography and geology makes the view truly unique.

From spring to summer, the surrounding greenery deepens, and the waterfall appears particularly powerful with abundant water flow. In autumn, the vibrant colors of the changing leaves add a touch of color to the landscape, while winter offers a sense of serene, quiet nature. The area offers a wonderful opportunity for geotourism. Visitors can explore the geological history of the region, observing the chert rock bodies and the steep terrain formed by tectonic movements. The nearby Komori River adds to the natural energy of the environment. It is an ideal spot for a nature walk where you can gain a deeper understanding of the geological background of the Chichibu area.
There are several fascinating spots near the falls. For instance, the area is home to the natural habitat of the Sesselosia (naturalized plants) near Dojo. Mount Ryogami is also recognized as one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains, making it a popular destination for hikers and climbers. Additionally, you can relax at nearby hot spring facilities, such as 'Ryoshi no Yu,' to unwind after your nature exploration.
