Marine World Uminonakamichi (officially the Uminonakamichi Marine Ecosystem Science Museum) is a renowned aquarium located in Higashi-ku, Fukuoka City. Since its opening in 1989, it has showcased the rich marine biodiversity of the Kyushu region. The building's striking architecture, featuring a semi-circular design inspired by seashells and a tent-like roof, harmonizes beautifully with the natural environment of Uminonakamichi Seaside Park. Visitors can explore a wide range of marine ecosystems, from tropical to subarctic environments.
Opened in April 1989, the facility underwent significant renovations and expansions in 1995. A major reconstruction project was completed in 2017 to further enhance the exhibition quality. The current central theme, "The Seas of Kyushu," focuses on the local natural environment. One of the most iconic exhibits is the formalin-preserved Megamouth shark, which was famously found in Hakata Bay in 1994 and has since become a symbol of the museum.
The aquarium houses a vast collection of fish, dolphins, harbor seals, and sea turtles. The centerpiece is the breathtaking panoramic large tank, where massive sharks swim before your eyes, creating a powerful visual impact. The lively performance shows featuring dolphins and sea lions are also a major highlight that attracts crowds of all ages. With an estimated 350 species and 20,000 individual creatures, the facility offers an incredible look at marine diversity.
While the aquarium operates year-round, it occasionally offers special evening hours. Since the year 2000, special night-time operations have been held, particularly during the summer vacation period. These evening sessions allow visitors to experience the changing atmosphere of the exhibits through different lighting and the unique behaviors of the marine life at different times of the day.
Visitors can observe the intricate behaviors of marine life up close in various display areas. The dolphin and sea lion shows are highly engaging, combining educational elements with high-energy entertainment. For relaxation, the facility includes comfortable rest areas and dining spaces, allowing guests to take a break after exploring the exhibits.
The aquarium is situated on a sandbar within the Uminonakamichi Seaside Park. This area is surrounded by lush greenery and the sea, offering a peaceful natural environment. Because it is located slightly away from the center of Fukuoka City, it is often integrated into sightseeing routes that focus on nature and outdoor leisure.
While the exhibits are indoors, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, especially if you plan to explore the surrounding seaside park. Payments can be made via credit cards, transport IC cards (like Suica/Pasmo), or cash. English signage and staff assistance are available to help international visitors. No advanced reservation is required, though checking the crowd status is advised. The facility is fully accessible, featuring wheelchair-friendly parking, ramps, wheelchair rentals, and dedicated restrooms. Service animals, such as guide dogs, are also welcome.
