Manzamo is a celebrated scenic spot located in Onna Village, Kunigami District, Okinawa Prefecture, characterized by its striking Ryukuk limestone cliffs. From the cliffs approximately 20 meters above sea level, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the changing hues of the East China Sea. The most iconic feature is the unique rock formation that resembles an elephant's trunk. In October 2020, the surrounding facilities were revitalized, introducing a new way to experience the area. With the addition of shops, a food court, and observation decks, visitors can now enjoy a more immersive experience that combines natural sightseeing with dining and relaxation.
The name "Manzamo" carries significant historical weight. In 1726, when King Sho Kei of the Ryukyu Kingdom visited the area, he was so moved by the magnificent scenery presented to him by the local villagers that he praised the site as a "vast field (mo) where ten thousand people could sit (manza)." This site is part of the Okinawa Coast Quasi-National Park and has long been cherished as a place where Okinawa's nature, culture, and history converge. The area also holds historical depth, having served as a site for various communications facilities in the past.
The greatest highlight is the striking contrast between the white Ryukuk limestone cliffs and the deep blue of the East China Sea. The elephant-shaped rock is a magnet for photographers and nature lovers alike. The top of the cliff features a grassy plateau where various plants grow, including local species. The cliffs also host endemic flora such as the Okinawa violet, making it a site of high botanical value. Manzamo is accessible year-round, but its appearance changes with the seasons. A clear, sunny day is the best time to visit, as the blue of the East China Sea appears most vivid under bright sunlight. Since the facility includes a food court, visiting around lunchtime is a great way to combine a scenic view with a meal. Depending on the season, you can also observe the growth of evergreen shrubs and local endemic plants along the coast.
