Mansui-so is a historic western-style villa in Matsuyama, Ehime, constructed in 1922 (Taisho 11). It was built as a private residence by Count Sadakoto Hisamatsu, a descendant of the Matsuyama lords. Having served as a military attaché in France, the Count's personal preference is reflected in the building's exquisite pure French architectural style. Having escaped the destruction of war, the structure remains a remarkably preserved piece of history and is officially designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Ehime Prefecture.
This building was more than just a private villa; it served as a prestigious social hub for prominent figures of the era. Historical records indicate that it was a frequent stop for members of the Imperial Family during their visits to Matsuyama. There is even an anecdote that the completion of the villa was expedited to coincide with a visit by the future Emperor Showa (then Prince Hirohito), deeply intertwining the site with Japan's modern history. It stands as a symbol of Japan's modernization and the graceful reception of Western culture during the Taisho and early Showa eras.
