The Makunbetsu Wetland, located in Funaba-cho, Ishikari City, Hokkaido, is a 130-hectare low-lying wetland situated in the meandering section of the lower Ishikari River. The landscape is primarily composed of two distinct areas: an alder forest and a reed community. This rich natural environment offers a peaceful escape where visitors can observe the changing-of-the-seasons through the diverse flora and the melodic chirping of various wild birds. The area is particularly famous for its vibrant ecosystem that awakens with the arrival of spring.
The wetland preserves a pristine natural environment between the mouth of the Ishikari River and the lower reaches of the Shakkunbetsu River. For many years, this area has been maintained as a site for nature conservation and observation. The topography, shaped by the natural meanders of the Ishikari River, serves as a symbol of Hokkaido's untamed natural beauty. The most spectacular feature of this wetland is the massive colony of Skunk Cabbage (Mizubasho). Starting in mid-April, the flowers begin to bloom one after another, creating one of the largest and most impressive displays of Skunk Cabbage in Hokkaido. The blooming season typically concludes by early May. Visitors can also enjoy a scenic view of the Ishikari River Mouth Bridge and use the well-maintained boardwalks to observe various plants and wild birds up close. The shifting textures of the alder forest and reed beds provide a constantly changing visual experience.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. The period from mid-April to early May is the most highly recommended time to visit, as the wetland becomes blanketed in white Skunk Cabbage flowers, showcasing the powerful vitality of nature. This is also a peak time for bird activity, making it an ideal time for nature observation. During the daytime, a stroll along the boardwalk offers a refreshing way to enjoy the landscape alongside the flowing Ishikari River.
The site features a well-maintained boardwalk approximately 400 meters long and 1 meter wide, perfect for a contemplative nature walk. The path leads toward the edge of the Ishikari River, offering a clear view of the Ishikari River Mouth Bridge. Visitors can immerse themselves in the silence of nature, focusing on the sounds of birds and the gentle movement of the plants. It is a place for slow-paced exploration and seasonal reflection.
