Makitani Beach is a spectacular destination located within the San'in Kaigan National Park, boasting breathtaking natural scenery. The area is characterized by its high transparency and emerald green waters, with a shallow seabed that provides a safe and comfortable environment for families with small children. Because the waves are exceptionally calm, it is a perfect destination for beginners and young children learning to swim.
This region is a place where the beauty of nature, shaped over countless years, remains preserved. As part of the San'in Kaigan UNESCO Global Geopark, the area is rich in geological history. The coastline has long been a vital part of the local way of life, supporting communities that live in harmony with the sea. The greatest attraction is undoubtedly the clarity of the water. The transparent surface of the sea, visible just steps from the sandy shore, never fails to enchant visitors. Additionally, the pine forest stretching along the coast provides a serene space where you can relax to the soothing sound of the waves. At night, far from the light pollution of the city, the sky transforms into a magnificent theater of stars.
The peak season for swimming is typically from late July to mid-August. During this time, beach houses and campsites are in full swing, creating a vibrant and lively atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy a variety of-changing expressions of the landscape: playing in the bright sun during the day, watching the sunset over the Sea of Japan in the evening, and gazing at a blanket of stars in the silent night.
Beyond swimming, the area offers diverse outdoor experiences through its campsite. At the pine forest campsite located right by the sand, you can enjoy barbecues while feeling the sea breeze or experience an overnight stay immersed in nature. The area also attracts surfers throughout the year, serving as a hub for marine sports. Depending on the season, stargazing is one of the most profound activities available.
There are many charming spots nearby. For instance, within walking distance, you can find hot spring facilities such as Hamasaka Onsen and Nanakama Onsen, allowing you to refresh your body after a day at the beach. Furthermore, the nearby Uradome Coast area offers boat tours around beautiful islands and stunning coastal vistas.
When planning your visit, remember to bring swimwear, towels, a change of clothes, and a hat for sun protection. If you plan to use the campsite, please bring your own tent and camping gear. Note that camping and barbecues are strictly prohibited on the sandy beach itself; you must use the designated campsite areas. Payments at local shops may vary between cash and credit cards. As English-language signage is limited, it is helpful to have basic communication tools ready. Please be aware that the sandy terrain may present uneven surfaces.
