Overview & Charm

Makishi Public Market is a traditional market that has long supported the local food culture in the center of Naha, Okinawa. Although it is a modern 3-story building that reopened in March 2023, it perfectly preserves the energetic atmosphere of what locals call 'Machigwa' (market). The 1st floor features shops selling meat, fresh fish, and various fresh produce, while the 2nd floor houses a dining area where you can enjoy your meals. The most distinctive feature is the 'Mochiage' system: you purchase ingredients on the 1st floor and bring them to the 2nd floor to be cooked. This allows you to experience the bounty of Okinawa's seas and mountains in the most intimate and delicious way possible.

History & Cultural Background

The history of this market is deep, having opened in 1950 as the Naha Municipal Makishi Public Market. It has played a vital role in supporting the local community's food needs since the post-war era. While the landscape once featured unique water-based stalls, the facility underwent significant changes due to aging. After a period of temporary relocation for redevelopment, the market reopened at its current location in its new, renovated form on March 19, 2023. It is not just a commercial space but a place that inherits the history of being the 'people's kitchen,' evolving into a modern market for a new era.

Main Highlights

The greatest charm of the market is the seamless culinary experience between the 1st and 2nd floors. In the fresh fish section on the 1st floor, you will find colorful tropical fish and uniquely Okinawan ingredients. Selecting your ingredients here and having them prepared at the dining area on the 2nd floor is a cultural experience unique to this location. The new building features an open 3-story design: the 1st floor is dedicated to meat, fish, and fresh produce; the 2nd floor offers event spaces and dining; and the 3rd floor serves as management and multi-purpose space. It is a spot where you can visually and tangibly taste the diversity of Okinawan cuisine.

Recommended Times & Seasons

The market is open from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, offering different vibes depending on the time. In the mornings, you can witness the high energy as fresh ingredients arrive and local shoppers gather. Toward the evening, the atmosphere shifts toward a dining-focused crowd enjoying meals at the 2nd-floor restaurants. Please note that since last orders vary by shop, if you wish to use the 'Mochiage' cooking service, it is recommended to complete your selection by 7:45 PM. Depending on the season, special events like New Year celebrations may also be held.

Experiences & Activities

More than just shopping, this is a place for a true 'culinary experience.' The process of choosing fresh fish from the 1st floor and having it cooked on the 2nd floor is a wonderful way to deeply understand Okinawan food culture. The 2nd floor also features an event space where local cultural activities may take place. The market's design encourages exploration through pedestrian-friendly paths, allowing you to observe the daily life of Okinawa while strolling through the surrounding streets.

Surrounding Area

Makishi Public Market is located very close to Kokusai-dori (International Street), the main tourism hub of Naha. It is situated about 150 meters from International Street via the Makishi Market-dori. The surrounding area is densely packed with restaurants and souvenir shops. After visiting the market, a stroll through the nearby 'Heiwa-dori' or 'Nahamachi' areas will lead you to deeper, more authentic Oềnawa streetscapes and various gourmet spots.
