Maizuru Nature and Culture Park is a vast, lush park located on the Oura Peninsula in Maizuru City, Kyoto Prefecture. Developed on the former site of the Seibu Farm, the park spans an impressive 34.7 hectares, filled with diverse flora that changes beautifully with the seasons. The most unique aspect of this park is its "seasonal opening style." Instead of being open year-round, the park highlights specific botanical wonders at certain times: rare camellia varieties in the spring, a massive 2-hectare hydrangea garden in early summer, and vibrant autumn foliage in the fall. Each visit offers a completely different and breathtaking landscape.
The land was originally used as the Seibu Farm. The site was later acquired by Maizuru City and developed into the current Nature and Culture Park to preserve the natural environment while providing a space for citizens and tourists to connect with nature. It serves as a vital center for protecting the diverse plant life and the unique ecosystem of the Oura Peninsula, acting as a symbol of the region's natural heritage.
The highlights of the park are defined by its seasonal "gardens." From mid-to-late March, the "Camellia Garden" showcases rare and exquisite camellia species that are hard to find elsewhere. In mid-to-late June, the "Hydrangea Garden" becomes a photogenic paradise, with approximately 100 varieties of hydrangeas blooming across a 2-hectare area. Finally, around November, the "Autumn Leaves Garden" offers a spectacular display of colors as the season deepens. These experiences are only available during the specific seasonal opening periods, making them truly precious moments.
Because the park operates on a seasonal basis, it is crucial to check the opening schedule. The primary periods are March for camellias, June for hydrangeas, and November for autumn leaves. Outside of these periods, the park is generally closed. To experience the most vivid colors, we recommend visiting during the peak bloom. For the hydrangea season in early summer, visiting in the morning is ideal, as the soft light enhances the natural colors of the flowers.
With its well-maintained walking paths, visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll while observing seasonal plants up close. Whether it is photography in the hydrangea garden or observing rare camellias, the park offers a deep connection with nature.
