Maime no Ike is a serene pond located in the Norikura Kogen highlands of Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, at an altitude of approximately 1,450 meters. Surrounded by lush, dense forests, the pond is renowned for its mirror-like surface that perfectly reflects the surrounding mountains. The most iconic sight is the 'Reverse Mt. Norikura,' where the snow-capped peak of Mt. Norikura is reflected clearly in the still water. The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons, offering particularly dramatic views during the autumn foliage season and the mystical moments when morning mist settles over the water.
This area is part of the Norikura Kogen highland, where the high-altitude natural environment is meticulously preserved. While there are no specific historical buildings at the pond itself, the site has long been cherished as a place to appreciate the raw beauty of nature. It forms part of a larger ecosystem alongside nearby bodies of water like Shinobu-no-ike and Osoame-ike, representing the pristine high-altitude landscape of the Japanese Alps.

There are several key experiences at Maime no Ike. First is the 'Reverse Mt. Norikura'—on clear days, the blue sky and the majestic mountain peak create a stunning reflection. Second is the autumn foliage from mid-to-late October, when the surrounding trees turn vibrant shades of yellow and red, creating a striking contrast with the water. Lastly, the early morning mist provides a magical atmosphere; as the sun rises, the light filtering through the fog creates a dreamlike, ethereal scene. These elements make it a premier destination for landscape photographers and nature lovers.
The recommended months to visit are May and October. The peak of autumn colors occurs from mid-to-late October, offering a spectacular display of color. For the most unique experience, we highly recommend visiting in the early morning. During this time, you can witness the mist rising from the water's surface and the soft light of the rising sun filtering through the trees, providing a tranquil and much more spiritual atmosphere than the bright daylight hours.

Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks through nature or professional landscape photography. The pond is very accessible, located only about a 5-minute walk from the Maime no Ike parking lot. You can also incorporate a walk through the surrounding area to visit other nearby ponds such as Shinobu-no-ike, Osoame-ike, and Dojo-ike, making it a perfect part of a nature trekking route. It is an ideal environment for high-altitude nature observation.
Near Maime no Ike, you will find several other natural gems. On your way from the parking lot, you can encounter Shinobu-no-ike, and the area is dotted with other scenic ponds like Osoame-ike and Dojo-ike. Additionally, nearby natural spots like Bansho Falls allow you to fully experience the high-altitude charm of the Norikura Kogen region.

As the pond is located at an altitude of 1,450m, please be mindful of temperature fluctuations. We strongly recommend bringing warm clothing (such as a jacket) especially for early morning visits or during certain seasons. While the paths are relatively well-maintained, there may be uneven surfaces and natural steps, so comfortable walking shoes are essential.
