SCMAGLEV and Railway Park is a specialized museum located in Kinjo Pier, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, dedicated to the history and technology of railways. The museum features an impressive collection of vehicles, including cutting-edge superconducting Maglev technology, various generations of Shinkansen (bullet trains), and classic local trains. Many of the displayed vehicles have a deep connection to the Tokai region, offering a visual journey through the evolution of Japanese rail. The facility boasts 35 vehicles in the indoor exhibition area and 4 vehicles in the outdoor display area.
Opened on March 14, 2011, this facility plays a vital role in introducing the advancements in railway technology and demonstrating the profound impact rail has had on society. The collection includes vehicles of significant historical value. For instance, the steam locomotive 'Hoji 6014' has been designated as a candidate for an Important Cultural Property by the Council for Cultural Affairs. Through these authentic vehicles, the museum preserves and communicates the history of the technological progress that supported Japan's modernization.
The museum features a wide array of Shinkansen and local train models from different eras. Notable outdoor displays include the three-car X0 test set of the Shinkansen N700 series. Inside, visitors can explore the intricate mechanisms of trains through various simulators, allowing for a deeper understanding of how these machines function. The exhibits are designed to bridge the gap between historical appreciation and technical education.
While the museum is a year-round destination, the extensive indoor exhibits make it an ideal choice for any weather conditions. Most displayed vehicles are in 'static preservation' (stationary displays), but the museum occasionally hosts special events that offer limited access to the interiors of certain vehicles. In the past, special openings have been held for Shinkansen test trains and diesel railcars. We highly recommend checking the official information in advance to catch these rare opportunities.
Visitors can engage with interactive simulators that teach the fundamental principles of railway operation. Although most vehicles are for external viewing only, certain special events provide opportunities to step inside the carriages. For organized groups such as schools or kindergartens, the facility offers specialized services, including staff-led orientations and options for lunch at the center deck.
Located in the Kinjo Pier area of Nagoya's bay side, the museum is part of a vibrant tourism hub. It is situated near popular attractions like LEGOLAND® Japan and Port Messe Nagoya, making it easy to integrate into a full day of sightseeing. Access is highly convenient via public transport; the museum is just a 2-minute walk from Kinjofuto Station on the Aonami Line.
The facility is fully barrier-free, featuring wheelchair-accessible entrances, restrooms, and parking. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes as you will be moving between various large-scale exhibits. For payment, you can use cash or major transportation IC cards such as TOICA, Suica, or manaca. Please note that most vehicles are for display only and entry into the carriages is restricted unless otherwise specified. Please respect all signage and rules during your visit.
