Lake Aoki is the largest and most prominent of the Nishina Three Lakes, located in Omachi City, Nagano Prefecture. It is renowned for its high water clarity and a unique shape that resembles a heart from certain angles. The lake is surrounded by lush, dense forests, and from the southeast, visitors can enjoy a majestic view of the Hakba mountain range. It is a premier spot for experiencing the changing seasons through natural scenery.
Lake Aoki has been preserved as a pristine natural environment for generations. The surrounding topography, vegetation, and seasonal shifts are iconic symbols of the local ecosystem. The area is well-known for its seasonal phenomena, such as the blooming of Oyamazakura (mountain cherry blossoms) in spring, the vibrant colors of autumn foliage, and the arrival of migratory birds in winter, reflecting the deep connection between the local culture and nature.
The most striking feature of Lake Aoki is its shape and the dramatic landscape surrounding it. It serves as an exceptional photo spot, especially when framed against the backdrop of the Hakuba Sanzan (the three peaks of Hakuba: Mt. Yari, Mt. Shakushi, and Mt. Hakuba). During periods when snow remains on the Northern Alps, the contrast between the white peaks and the autumn colors is particularly breathtaking. The road circling the lake offers constant, beautiful vistas of the Hakuba mountains.
The scenery changes dramatically depending on the season. In spring, you can witness the delicate Oyamazakura blossoms; in summer, the forest turns a deep, refreshing green; in autumn, the landscape is painted with vibrant colors; and in winter, migratory birds arrive. A peak time for photography is early November, when the autumn colors of the lake and the surrounding hillsides perfectly complement the snowy peaks of the Hakuba mountains. For the best views, we recommend using the lakeside roads rather than the main highway.
The area around Lake Aoki offers a variety of activities that leverage its natural environment. Cycling is a popular way to explore the perimeter of the lake via the scenic lakeside roads. During the summer, visitors can enjoy SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding) starting from the early morning hours. For a more magical experience, look out for seasonal night activities such as firefly cruises.
The area surrounding Lake Aoki is a rich natural landscape within Omachi City. Nearby spots like "Asakura Arts & Crafts" offer a unique blend of nature and local culture. With easy access to the Hakuba area, Lake Aoki serves as an excellent base for exploring the foot of the Northern Japanese Alps.
