Kyuan-ji is a Buddhist temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect located in Ikeda City, Osaka Prefecture. Founded in the year 725, it boasts a profound history spanning over 1,300 years. It has long been celebrated as one of the 'Temples of Flowers in Kansai,' welcoming visitors with a diverse array of seasonal blossoms that transform the landscape throughout the year. The temple is steeped in historical significance, with stories involving the great unifier Toyotomi Hideyoshi, its status as a temple under the patronage of the Konoe Emperor, and the legacy of the poet Heima Choga. It offers a serene and beautiful space where nature and spiritual devotion seamlessly blend.
The origins of the temple trace back to the 'Anyoin' founded by Bodhisattva Gyoki. During the Tencho era (824–834), Kobo Daishi stayed here, developing the site as a center for Shingon Esoteric Buddhism. Although the temple was once destroyed in 1140, it was rebuilt in 1145 through the imperial-ordered patronage of the Konoe Emperor, leading to the reconstruction of the Sakura Gate and various temple halls. During the Azuchi-Momoyama period, it was visited by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and during the Edo period, the poet Heima Choga resided here, helping to spread devotion to Kannon. Today, it continues to serve as an important site within the Saigoku Yakushi 49-site pilgrimage and the Settsu 88-temple circuit.
The temple grounds feature a path leading through seasonal wonders such as hydrangeas, autumn colors, peonies, and azaleas. A particular highlight is the 'Koku-en' garden, which offers a breathtaking landscape of the Ajisa mountain and Banji Pond, providing a sense of profound healing. Visitors can also discover high-value cultural assets, including the Ro-mon (Tower Gate) designated as a National Important Cultural Property, historic Buddhist statues, and the Great Nirvana statue enshrined within the stupa. The seasonal 'Kirie Goshuin' (paper-cut calligraphy stamps) are highly popular among visitors for their artistic, traditional Japanese design.
Kyuan-ji offers a unique experience for every season. In June, the hydrangeas are in full bloom, while the autumn season brings vibrant colors to the temple grounds. In spring, visitors can enjoy flowers like peonies. For the best experience, visit during the bright daylight hours to appreciate the lush greenery and garden scenery, or visit toward the late afternoon to feel the solemn, tranquil atmosphere of the temple. Visiting in alignment with the release of seasonal Goshuin (such as hydrangea or maple designs) is a special way to experience the temple's charm.

Located in Ikeda City, the temple is surrounded by areas that retain much of their historical charm. It is easily accessible from Osaka City and is conveniently located near the Minoh area, making it an excellent stop on a sightseeing route that combines nature and history.
As the temple grounds are quite spacious and natural, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please refrain from eating or drinking near the garden ponds; if you have a meal, please use the designated benches. It is important to carry your trash home with you, as there are limited disposal facilities. For professional photography, prior notification to the reception or via telephone is required. To maintain the serene atmosphere, please act with respect and quiet decorum at all times.
