The Former Takagi Residence is a historic building located within the Chiran Samurai District in Minamisitsuma, Kagoshima Prefecture. During the Edo period, Chiran was ruled by the Sata clan, a branch of the prestigious Shimazu family. The Sata clan played a vital role within the Satsuma Domain. Most of the current samurai residences in this area were constructed during the era of Shimazu Kumikane (1732–1772), the 18th head of the Sata clan. Because Chiran was a significant hub for trade with the Ryukyu Kingdom, the architectural styles and garden designs reflect this maritime connection. For instance, elements such as the 'Hinpun' (windbreak stone) at the entrance and 'Sekiganto' (protective stone tablets) are characteristic features deeply connected to Okinawan culture.
