The Former Sakuranomiya Kokaido (Former Mint Front Entrance) is a historic building designated as a National Important Cultural Property in Kita-ku, Osaka. The most striking feature of this building is that it is a relocated and preserved portion of the front entrance of the former Mint (the entrance to the gold and silver coin foundry) completed in 1871. The heavy, dignified stone structure embodies the architectural techniques and design aesthetics of the Meiji era.
Historically, this site played a significant role as part of a building associated with the imperial visits of the Meiji Emperor. Today, it has been revitalized as a multi-purpose facility, serving as a wedding venue, event space, and restaurant, allowing visitors to experience high-quality dining within a majestic historical setting.
The history of this architecture dates back to 1871. It was originally designed by Thomas James Watters alongside the former reception hall of the Mint (Senpukan). However, due to aging, the original structure was slated for demolition in 1927. At that time, the stone materials of the front entrance were preserved and later reconstructed in November 1935 as the entrance to the Meiji Emperor Memorial Hall (later Seitokukan) through public donations.
After the war, the building served as the Sakuranomiya Kokaido and later housed the Osaka City Library (Sakuranomiya Library) on its second floor. Following its use as a youth art gallery, it was reborn in 2012 as a sophisticated complex featuring a wedding hall and restaurant. It remains a highly prestigious site, connected to the history of the Meiji Emperor's visit to Osaka, where he arrived at the Mint's pier and stayed at the reception hall.
The most notable feature is the "Front Entrance" itself, which is a designated National Important Cultural Property. The heavy construction using preserved stone showcases the high level of craftsmanship and the architectural style of the Meiji period.
