Art Plaza is a multi-functional art and cultural complex housed in the former Oita Prefectural Library building. The structure was completed in 1966, designed by the world-renowned architect Arata Isozaki, who hails from Oita. Today, it serves as a vital space for promoting architectural beauty and supporting the cultural activities of the local community. The facility spans a site area of 3,023.4 m² with a total floor area of 4,081.551 m², featuring a reinforced concrete structure across one basement level and three upper floors.
Originally completed in 1966 as the 'Oita Prefectural Oita Library,' the building underwent a transformation when the prefectural library moved to a new location in 1996. The city of Oita reclaimed the site and revitalized it as 'Art Plaza,' a hub for cultural exchange. Its profound architectural significance was officially recognized on October 31, 2022, when it was registered as a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property. Notable features include the exposed concrete hollow beams, the massive exterior pair walls, and the dynamic interior space created by the use of skip floors, which provide varying elevations throughout the building.
The facility offers diverse exhibitions and activity spaces across different levels. On the 3rd floor, you can find a permanent exhibition of architectural models and documents from Arata Isozaki's global projects, showcasing his monumental achievements. The 1st and 2nd floors house citizen galleries and creative spaces for artistic production. The greatest highlight is the chance to experience the spatial design and structural beauty that directly reflects the architect's original vision.
The facility is open from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM, allowing for extended stays even in the evening. However, please note that closing times vary by floor: the Museum Shop on the 2nd floor closes at 5:00 PM, and the Arata Isozaki Architectural Exhibition Room on the 3rd floor closes at 6:00 PM. For a relaxed viewing experience, an early afternoon visit is recommended. The facility is closed during the New Year holidays (December 28 to January 3), though it may remain open if specific events are scheduled.
