The Former Mikasa Hotel is a designated Important Cultural Property located in Karuizawa, Kitasaku District, Nagano Prefecture. Originally opened as the 'Mikasa Hotel,' this building has grown alongside the development of Karuizawa as a premier international resort. It is a pure Western-style wooden structure that once boasted the most advanced and luxurious facilities of its era. Today, it is carefully preserved as a site of immense historical and architectural value.
The building opened in May 1906 (Meiji 39) as the Mikasa Hotel. The structure itself is a Western-style wooden building designed by Japanese architects, blending Western aesthetics with local craftsmanship. During its heyday, it was often referred to as the 'Rokumeikan of Karuizawa' because of the many prominent figures and celebrities who stayed there. Following World War II, the site was even used as a facility for the U.S. Army, reflecting the changing eras of Japanese history. In 1980, its architectural significance was officially recognized when it was designated as a National Important Cultural Property. It remains a vital piece of cultural heritage that tells the story of Japan's modernization.
The building's exterior and structure showcase the sophisticated architectural techniques used to create Western-style wooden structures at the turn of the century. In the past, the expansive grounds included an annex, gardens, tennis courts, a swimming pool, and a cricket yard. While much of the original grounds have changed, the remaining main building allows visitors to experience the atmosphere of a high-end luxury resort and the architectural styles of the early 20th century.
The best time to visit is during the summer months, specifically July and August, when the greenery is lush. The facility is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the last admission at 4:30 PM. Visiting during the bright daylight hours is highly recommended, as it allows you to clearly observe the intricate details of the wooden architecture and the structural elegance of the building.
Currently, the site primarily serves as a historical museum and architectural showcase. Visitors can learn about the culinary history of the era through the lens of the recipes once served at the hotel, such as the specific styles of curry and coffee that were popular during its prime.
The 'Mikasa-dori' street, which connects the Old Karuizaw shopping district to the hotel, is famous for its beautiful tree-lined paths. The surrounding area is perfect for a leisurely stroll, offering a sense of the nostalgic and historic atmosphere that Karuizawa is known for.
