The Former Kachomiya Residence is a stunning half-timbered Western-style building located in Jomyoji, Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Built in 1929, this residence creates a rare space where Western architectural elegance harmonizes with the traditional Japanese landscape. Situated at the northern end of a valley, the estate is characterized by its seamless integration with the surrounding nature. The highlight for many visitors is the symmetrical French-style garden stretching to the south, adorned with a captivating lion-shaped fountain that adds a touch of grandeur to the scenery.
The residence is named after the former noble family (Kazoku) associated with the estate. It stands as a precious piece of modern Japanese architectural history, located in one of the few areas where pre-war Western-style mansions still remain. Currently managed and preserved by Kamakura City, it serves as a symbol of the region's historical landscape. The three-story wooden structure features traditional timber-and-mortar exterior decorations, showcasing a unique cultural fusion of Japanese aesthetic sensibilities and Western architectural styles.
The greatest attraction is the seamless connection between the mansion and its exquisite garden. The geometric design of the French-style garden offers a different face with every season, while the central pond and lion fountain provide movement and elegance to the landscape. Inside the mansion, visitors can discover various Western design elements, including Baroque, Rococo, and Art Deco influences. The garden is open year-round, allowing visitors to enjoy the changing beauty of the four seasons. We recommend strolling through the grounds during times when the light shifts beautifully. Please note, however, that access to the interior of the building is limited to specific days during spring and autumn; it is essential to check the official schedule before visiting. On clear days, the sunlight hitting the fountain and plants creates the most picturesque moments for photography.
