The Former Horikiri Residence serves as a cultural hub and tourism center in the famous Iizaka Onsen area of Fukushima Prefecture. It was once the residence of the Horikiri family, a prominent family of wealthy farmers and merchants who played a significant role in the region's development. The site is home to several structures of immense historical value, most notably the 'Jikken-kura,' a massive earthen storehouse built in 1775 (the 4th year of the An'ei era), which is one of the oldest and largest of its kind in the prefecture. Additionally, the main residence showcases the elegant architecture of the Meiji era, providing a window into the transition toward modern Japanese styles.
The residence has been the home of the Horikiri family since the Edo period. The family has long contributed to the prosperity of Iizaka, and the structures remaining on the grounds tell the story of their legacy. While the main house reflects the refined lifestyle of the Meiji era, other structures like the 'Shin-kura,' 'Naka-no-kura,' and 'Dogu-kura' serve as exhibition spaces. These storehouses preserve and display artifacts and tools that illustrate the daily lives and cultural traditions of the past, acting as a vital center for local heritage preservation.

The 'foot and hand bath' area is designed to be accessible, including for those using wheelchairs, ensuring everyone can enjoy the natural hot spring water in a peaceful environment. Additionally, volunteer guides are sometimes available to provide guided tours under specific conditions (typically Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays from 10:00 to 15:00).

Smoking is strictly prohibited throughout the entire premises. Pets are not allowed on the grounds. If you intend to use professional filming equipment or use footage for media/publications, you must submit a 'Permission for Activity' application in advance. For groups of 10 or more people, prior registration is required. Please respect the historical integrity of the buildings during your visit.
