The Former Daika Warehouse is a historic structure built in 1891 (Meiji 24) located in Otaru, Hokkaido. It is officially designated as Otaru's No. 1 Historical Building, serving as a symbol of the city's history as a vital logistics hub. The building is characterized by its heavy stone structure and exterior walls made of Sapporo soft stone, making it a crucial element of the scenic landscape surrounding the Otaru Canal.
The building was constructed by Shichihei Daika, a marine merchant originally from Ishikawa Prefecture. Originally used as a warehouse, the structure reflects the industrial era when Otaru flourished as a major shipping center. On the gable wall, you can still see the 'Yamashichi' mark, a tribute to the founder, Mr. Daika. From the Meiji to the Taisho eras, Otaru developed rapidly alongside the growth of the Kitamaebune shipping routes and the railway system. The Former Daika Warehouse remains a precious legacy that preserves this architectural style. Between 2001 and 2002, the exterior walls and roof tiles underwent restoration to preserve its current majestic appearance.
The most striking feature is its unique construction method known as 'Mokkotsu Sekizo' (wooden-frame and stone construction). The walls are crafted from local Sapporo soft stone, and the double-arch design at the entrance showcases the exquisite craftsmanship and architectural elegance of that period. Visitors can also observe fine historical details, such as the 'Yamashichi' mark engraved on the gable. The building's presence, combined with the view of the Otaru Canal, allows you to feel the scale of industrial development from a bygone era.
