Kyoto Aquarium is a specialized facility themed around the natural water ecosystems of the Kyoto region. The center features a stunning large tank that recreates the atmosphere of the sea near Kyoto, alongside captivating exhibits of penguins and fur seals. The facility offers a wide variety of areas where visitors can observe the delicate movements of aquatic life up close.
Opened in 2012, the aquarium was developed as an Orix Real Estate project. The building is a three-story reinforced concrete structure designed to serve as a cultural hub that communicates the natural environment and the unique water-based culture of Kyoto to both locals and visitors.
The museum features diverse exhibition areas. The most iconic is the large tank representing the "Sea of Kyoto," which serves as the centerpiece of the facility. Visitors can also witness lively feeding sessions in the penguin and fur seal areas at specific times. The exhibits are thoughtfully designed to focus on aquatic ecosystems, including unique displays where you can encounter creatures living alongside garden eels.
The aquarium is particularly popular during the summer months of July and August. To make your visit more engaging, there are scheduled feeding programs: the "Main Tank Feeding Time" at 12:30, "Penguin Feeding Time" at 13:00, and "Fur Seal Feeding Time" at 14:15. These sessions allow you to observe the animals' active behaviors and natural instincts.
Beyond simple observation, the aquarium offers educational programs developed by professional keepers. At the
