Kuzuryu Jinja Hongu is a sacred shrine located in Hakone, Ashigarashimo District, Kanagawa Prefecture. Situated within the breathtaking natural environment of Hakone, the striking vermilion-painted shrine buildings create a vivid contrast against the surrounding lush greenery. This shrine serves as an outer shrine (geisha) of the famous Hakone Shrine, representing a place where nature and spiritual faith are deeply intertwined.
The deity enshrined here, Kuzuryu Omikami, is a legendary figure deeply rooted in the local history of this land. Historically, the deity serves as a guardian or subordinate to the Hakone Shrine. The main shrine is located within the "Hakone Kuzuryu Forest" in the Hakoneen area, where rituals integrated with the natural environment have been continuously practiced. Traditions are kept alive through regular ceremonies, such as the monthly ritual held on the 13th of every month and the grand annual festival (Reitaisai) held on June 13th.
The most striking feature of the shrine is the sacred atmosphere created by the deep green forest and the brilliant vermilion architecture. The shrine buildings follow traditional Japanese architectural styles, with red pillars and intricate decorations providing a stunning visual experience. During festivals, visitors can witness traditional ceremonies set against the backdrop of breathtaking scenery. While the shrine is accessible throughout the year, certain periods offer special spiritual experiences. For instance, the grand annual festival is held on June 13th. Additionally, since the monthly ritual occurs on the 13th of every month, visiting on these dates allows you to experience the atmosphere of traditional Japanese ceremonies. Notably, on the mornings of the 13th, visitors attending the ritual may benefit from free admission to the "Hakone Kuzuryu Forest." The changing colors of the seasons also make every visit unique.
Beyond standard worship, a unique way to visit is by boat. On the 13th of each month during the monthly ritual, a special "Kuzuryu Jinja Worship Boat" operates, connecting Moto-Hakone Port or Hakoneen Port to the Kamiyama Pier. This offers a unique perspective of the shrine from the water, different from the standard land route. Furthermore, the shrine office accepts applications for formal prayers (Gokito), allowing visitors to participate in rituals led by Shinto priests. The shrine is located within the Hakoneen area, which is surrounded by various tourist facilities convenient for Hakone sightseeing. While it is accessible on foot from Hakoneen or Kojiri Terminal, please note that you will be walking through a natural forest environment, so planning your route in advance is recommended. It is also common to visit this shrine as part of a cultural route that includes the famous Hakone Shrine.
