Kuwonokidai Wetland is a breathtaking natural sanctuary located in Yajima, Yurihonjo City, Akita Prefecture. Formed by ancient rock avalanches from the nearby Mt. Chokai, this wetland sits at a high altitude of 690 meters and is surrounded by a dense forest of beech trees and deciduous shrubs. The vast 8-hectare area is a true masterpiece of nature. To ensure a safe and comfortable experience, the area features well-maintained wooden boardwalks, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the scenery without worrying about the terrain.
The origins of this wetland are deeply rooted in the geological history of the region, having been formed by the accumulation of debris from prehistoric rock avalanches from Mt. Chokai. Over many centuries, it has developed a unique ecosystem alongside primeval beech forests. To preserve this precious natural resource while allowing people to experience its beauty, the local community has implemented careful maintenance, including the installation of boardwalks to protect the delicate environment.
The greatest charm of Kuwonokidai Wetland lies in its seasonal botanical displays. In early June, the landscape transforms with the appearance of 'Eriophorum' (cotton grass), characterized by its delicate white tufts, and the vibrant colors of 'Rhododendron' (Renge Tsutsuji). The sight of these flowers against the crisp, fresh air—often while the snow still lingers on the peaks of Mt. Chokai—is truly exceptional. We recommend walking the wooden paths to fully appreciate the striking contrast between the lush beech forest and the open wetland.
While the wetland is beautiful year-round, the most spectacular time to visit is during the blooming season. From April to May, you can witness the arrival of spring, and in June, the colors of the Eriophorum and Rhododendron reach their peak. Visiting during daylight hours allows you to see the vivid colors of the flora and the deep greens of the beech forest in their best light. Please be aware that temperatures can fluctuate significantly depending on the weather and season, so planning your visit with appropriate gear is highly recommended.

To protect this delicate ecosystem, please strictly follow these rules: Eating and disposing of trash within the wetland is strictly prohibited; please take all trash home with you. Regarding clothing, while you will be walking on boardwalks, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes suitable for a natural environment. As temperatures can drop at this altitude, bring layers to adjust to the weather. Please note that there are no shops or facilities on-site, so ensure you bring all necessary supplies (water, snacks, etc.) in advance.
