The Nihonmatsu Observatory is a premier viewing spot located within the Kushiro Wetland in Hokkaido. Situated near Prefectural Road 1060 (also known as the Kuchoro Harano-to route), it sits atop a hill on the eastern side of the Kushiro River. Because there are very few tall trees in the vicinity, the area offers an expansive, unobstructed panoramic view. From this height, visitors can observe the graceful meanders of the Kushiro River, the vastness of the wetlands, and even the distant urban area of Kushiro City.
This area is part of the Kushiro Wetland, one of Japan's largest and most significant wetland ecosystems. While the Nihonmatsu Observatory itself is a natural vantage point rather than a site with specific historical buildings or man-made structures, it serves as a vital window into the region's heritage. The landscape has been shaped over millennia by the natural flow of the Kushiro River, and visiting this spot allows one to deeply appreciate the preserved natural environment that defines this region.
From the Nihonmatsu Observatory, you can witness the mesmerizing way the Kushiro River snakes through the wetlands. Depending on the season and the time of day, you may even see the iconic Norokko Train traveling along the Kushiro Line. The lack of obstructions provides a sense of immense scale, where the boundary between the vast sky and the earth feels almost touchable.
While the area is accessible year-round, visiting during daylight hours is highly recommended. During the day, the vibrant greens of the wetlands and the clarity of the river are most striking. The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons: from the lush, verdant greenery of spring and summer to the golden and rustic hues of autumn, offering a different facial expression of nature every time you visit.
As the surrounding area consists of unpaved paths and wild natural environments, most visitors stop by during a drive or a cycling tour to soak in the views. Please note that the paths leading to the observation points may include steep slopes or sandy sections, so caution is advised when navigating with vehicles or bicycles.
There are several other notable viewpoints nearby, such as the Kottaro Observatory, Sarubetsu Observatory, and Iwabotoyama Observatory. Additionally, nearby facilities like the Shiratutoro Nature Information Center and the Tsuru-no-jo Eco-museum Center allow you to dive even deeper into the ecology and history of the Kushiro Wetland.
