Krusu no Umi (Sea of Crosses) is a stunning scenic spot located in Hososhima, Hyuga City, Miyazaki Prefecture. The landscape is defined by a massive rock formation split into a cross shape by centuries of wave erosion, stretching approximately 200 meters east-to-west and 220 meters north-to-south, with a depth of 10 meters. The name 'Krusu' is derived from the Portuguese word for 'cross.' Furthermore, the rock formation is famous because it resembles the kanji character '叶' (Kanau), which means 'to come true' or 'to be fulfilled,' making it a legendary site for making wishes.
Historically, locals referred to this area as 'Jumoji' (Cross) due to its distinctive coastal shape. As the area became a recognized tourist destination, the name 'Krusu no Umi' became established. The site is part of the Nippo Kaigan Quasi-National Park, and its name is a direct reflection of its natural geological origins. In recent years, its striking and unique scenery has even made it a popular filming location for promotional videos by major domestic and international automobile manufacturers.
The greatest highlight is the cross-shaped rock formation visible from above. This spectacular view, where the rocks and the surrounding sea harmonize, is a masterpiece of natural power. Additionally, the observation deck features the 'Bell of Wishes (Krusu no Kane).' This bell was installed by Hyuga City as a symbol of hope and a way for visitors to express their heartfelt wishes and dreams.
Krusu no Umi is accessible 24 hours a day. During the bright daylight hours, you can clearly see the 'Kanau' character formed by the rocks and the sharp details of the cross-shaped terrain. The expression of the sea changes significantly depending on the time of day, so visiting at different times will offer a completely different atmosphere and visual experience.
From the observation deck, you can observe the intricate shapes of the reefs floating in the sea. Visitors can also experience the tradition of making a wish through the 'Bell of Wishes.' The area is perfect for a scenic drive, allowing you to enjoy the breathtaking coastal route while traveling to the site.
The location offers excellent access to other sightseeing spots within Hyuga City. The surrounding area is widely known as a beautiful coastal driving route, making it an ideal stop for travelers exploring the Miyazaki coastline.
The site consists of an outdoor observation deck and coastal areas. We highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. While there is no entrance fee, it is useful to have cash if you use nearby facilities. Please check local signage for any English-language information.
