The sight of the weeping cherries reflected in the river surface creates a mystical and dreamlike atmosphere that is vastly different from the daytime view. Since it is located right next to the famous Tendo Onsen, it is a popular spot for travelers to enjoy the quintessential Japanese spring scenery after relaxing in the hot springs.
The cherry blossom scenery along the Kuratsugawa River is deeply intertwined with the local history. Tendo City hosts various events to celebrate the season, such as the 'Shidarezakura no Yube' (Evening of Weeping Cherry Blossoms). The most spectacular sight is the nighttime illumination. A 750m section around Oshoma Bridge and Hisha Bridge is lit up, showcasing the silhouettes of the weeping cherry blossoms. The contrast between the illuminated blossoms and their dark reflections on the river creates an incredibly emotional and poetic scene. Even during the day, the way the branches drape over the river creates a beautiful natural architecture. Near the Central Park area, you may also encounter food stalls during festivals, adding a lively and festive atmosphere to your cherry blossom viewing.
The best time to visit is typically from mid-April to early May. We highly recommend visiting after sunset to witness the illumination. The lights are usually active from approximately 18:30 to 22:00. As temperatures can drop in the evening, it is advisable to bring a light jacket. If you visit during early April, you might be able to experience special events like 'Shidarezakura no Yube' for a more enriched experience.
The primary activity is a leisurely stroll along the paths by the Kuratsugawa River to see the full-bloom weeping cherry blossoms up close. During the illumination hours, you can walk through a magical, glowing space. During local festivals, you can enjoy watching traditional processions or sampling local treats from food stalls. Combining a visit with a stay at a nearby Tendo Onsen hotel allows for a luxurious experience of soaking in hot springs and then heading out for a night walk under the blossoms.
The Tendo Onsen hot spring district spreads out right beside the Kuratsugawa River, making it very easy to integrate sightseeing with your stay. Other notable spots in Tendo include the 'Shogi Monuments' reflecting the city's status as a Shogi capital, and the nature-rich 'Anda no Mori.' Most of these attractions are within walking distance from Tendo Station or a short drive away, allowing for comprehensive sightseeing in the area.
