The Kurashiki Mingei Museum is a unique museum located in the beautiful Bikan Historical Quarter of Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture. The museum focuses on the exhibition of crafts used in daily life, such as ceramics, lacquerware, woodwork, and textiles. These items embody the concept of "Yo no Bi" (the beauty of utility)—the idea that functional objects can possess profound aesthetic beauty. The museum operates within a historic building that originally served as a rice storehouse (kura). Following the philosophy of the Mingei (Folk Art) movement, the museum aims to communicate the inherent beauty found in the tools used in everyday life. The exhibition is organized into categories based on three regions and various materials. Among a vast collection, visitors can see approximately 190 representative folk art pieces. Currently, the museum features special exhibitions such as "The Joyful Table," where items related to dining from around the world are displayed in themed rooms (such as the Basket Room, Hearth Room, and Furniture Room). Through these displays of cooking tools and vessels, visitors can experience the sculptural beauty of functional everyday objects.
The museum's exhibition content changes according to the season and specific exhibition schedules. Visiting during a special exhibition allows you to enjoy a more specialized theme, such as the current focus on dining-related tools. Additionally, the courtyard sometimes hosts the "Mingei Market," where folk art is sold and various cultural events are held.
