Kunimi no Tanada is a stunning terraced rice field located in the Ogisu district of Nasukarasuyama City, southern Tochigi Prefecture. Situated in a typical mountainous area where the Yamizo mountain range meets the plains, the landscape is characterized by rice paddies following the contours of a 'ku-no-ji' (letter J) shaped valley. It has been officially selected as one of the '100 Best Rice Terraces in Japan' by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. This recognition highlights the profound harmony between human cultivation and the natural terrain. Although the rate of cultivation has decreased in recent years, the area remains a legendary spot that once drew numerous professional photographers seeking the perfect shot.
The region has a long history of agriculture, shaped by the mountains of the Yamizo range and the flow of the Naka River. A notable feature of these terraces is the 'getabaki' structure, a traditional technique where the base is reinforced with stone masonry and the upper part consists of earthen slopes. This method was used to raise the height of the ridges (aze) to manage water and soil effectively. Historically, this area also served as a cultural hub where people gathered during different seasons to celebrate the agricultural cycle.
The most striking feature is the arrangement of the terraces following the natural terrain. The rice fields are built in a stepped fashion along the J-shaped valley. Spanning an area at an altitude of approximately 180 meters, the terraces change their appearance with the seasons, blending beautifully with the surrounding deep forests. In the past, an observation deck existed at the top of the terraces, allowing visitors to look down upon the expansive view. Today, it remains a place where one can witness the clear boundaries between human-made structures and the natural world in a traditional Japanese satoyama landscape.
The scenery of the terraces shifts dramatically with the seasons. Visitors can witness the vibrant green of the growing rice in early summer, the brilliant golden hues during the harvest season, and the quiet, rustic atmosphere of the fields during the drying process. For the best visual experience, visiting during the daytime is recommended, as the sunlight illuminates the slopes and highlights the depth and texture of the terrain.
While the primary activity is landscape appreciation, visitors can observe the unique agricultural culture of the region. The surrounding area is known for specialized farming, such as citrus cultivation at its northern limits in Japan. Observing the local specialties and traditional farming methods provides a deeper insight into the regional lifestyle.
