Usabara Hachiman-gu is a historic shrine located in Oita City, Oita Prefecture. It is said to have been founded in the early Heian period as a branch of the Usa Hachiman-gu shrine, and has long been revered as the most important shrine in the Bungo region. The shrine grounds, surrounded by a deep, lush forest, feature several historic structures, including the main hall which is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. The seamless integration of architecture and nature offers visitors a profound sense of tranquility and historical weight.
The shrine boasts a long history dating back to its establishment in the early Heian period. The architectural style of the shrine buildings follows the unique patterns of the Usa Jingū style. Many of the structures, dating from the Edo to the Meiji periods, have been preserved through meticulous restoration projects to ensure they are passed down to future generations. With the main hall, the tower gate, and the South Gate all designated as National Important Cultural Properties, the site serves as a vital testament to Japanese architectural skill and religious history.
The most striking feature of the grounds is the South Gate, adorned with exquisite carvings of dragons, flowers, birds, and saints; it is also known as the 'Higurashi-mon' (Sunset Gate). The main hall is particularly impressive, featuring a rare Hachiman-zukuri architectural style. Another must-see is the massive camphor tree, estimated to be approximately 3,000 years old, which serves as a powerful spiritual spot (power spot) radiating life energy. Additionally, visitors are drawn to the 'Happiness Fan Stone' (Kofuku no Ogi-ishi), which is said to grant wishes when stepped upon.
While Usabara Hachiman-gu offers beautiful scenery throughout the year, the seasons of fresh greenery in spring and autumn foliage are especially breathtaking, as the colors of the surrounding forest create a stunning contrast with the shrine buildings. During the first three days of the New Year (January), the Treasure House is open for special viewing. Visiting in the early morning, when the air is crisp and clear, allows you to experience an even deeper sense of serenity and spiritual stillness.
Visitors can experience traditional Japanese prayer culture here. Various rituals are held for purposes such as family safety, protection against evil, and academic success. Furthermore, the Treasure House (requires reservation and fee) offers a rare opportunity to view precious cultural assets, including ancient swords and Buddhist statues, providing a deep insight into Japan's spiritual and material history.

As the shrine grounds are located in a natural environment with some stone paths and unpaved sections, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please note that payments for amulets (omamori), sacred seals (goshuin), or prayers are generally handled in cash. It is also advisable to check details in advance for Treasure House viewings or special events. As a sacred site, please maintain a respectful and quiet demeanor while visiting the shrine.
