The Koya Ryujin Skyline is a high-altitude ridge road connecting Koyasan in Koya Town to Ryujin Village in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture. The route winds through the mountainous terrain of the Kii Peninsula, passing from the sacred Koyasan area through Mt. Goma toward the relaxing Ryujin Onsen. With its rhythmic ups and downs and elegant curves, it is a highly popular destination for both car enthusiasts and motorcycle touring enthusiasts seeking an exhilarating ride.
Historically, this route operated as a toll road. Since it was opened to the public for free in 2003, it has served as a vital part of National Route 371, acting as a major scenic artery for the region. The surrounding area, particularly around Mt. Goma, is characterized by a pristine natural environment with ancient forests dominated by beech trees, preserving the untouched beauty of the Kii Peninsula.
As you drive, you will encounter numerous scenic viewpoints offering panoramic views of the Kii mountains. The area around Mt. Goma is especially striking, where you can observe the natural color gradients created by the changing elevation. A major highlight is the 'Michi-no-Eki Tanabe City Ryujin Gomasan Sky Tower.' This observation tower, standing 33 meters tall, is shaped like a stack of ritual wooden sticks (gomagi) and offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains.
The landscape changes dramatically with the seasons. The autumn season is the most spectacular, as the entire mountain range is bathed in brilliant golden and crimson hues, attracting many visitors. However, please note that during the winter period (mid-December to late March), there are periods when motorcycle access is restricted or prohibited due to weather conditions. For the best experience, spring, summer, and autumn offer diverse natural vistas from your vehicle.
This area is ideal for experiencing the rugged beauty of Japan's mountain topography. The route's elevation changes and curves provide a stimulating driving or riding experience. The infrastructure is well-maintained with various rest areas and observation points, allowing travelers to pause and soak in the immense scale of the natural landscape.
The route concludes near the famous Ryujin Onsen, making it the perfect way to end a day of driving with a relaxing hot spring soak. Other nearby attractions include the Goma-san Forest Park Wildlife area and the beautiful Yu-gawa Valley. The Michi-no-Eki Sky Tower serves as a crucial rest stop located midway through the journey.
Drivers should be prepared for rapid weather changes typical of high-altitude mountain roads. If traveling by motorcycle, please check the seasonal restrictions, as riding may be prohibited from mid-December to late March. As this is a precious natural environment, please practice eco-friendly behavior.
