Kouri Bridge is a 1,960m long bridge connecting the Motobu Peninsula in Nago City to Kouri Island in Nakijin Village, northern Okinawa Island. Opened on February 8, 2005, it is renowned as the second longest free-to-use bridge in Okinawa Prefecture. As you drive across, the emerald green ocean stretches out on both sides, creating the sensation of gliding directly over the sea.
Construction of the bridge began in 1997, and it officially opened in 2005. At the time of its opening, it garnered significant attention as a major free-access link to the island. The bridge also carries deep cultural significance; Kouri Island is steeped in legends regarding the origins of humanity. This heritage is reflected in the design of the bridge's pillars. The 'Oya-bashira' (main pillars) consist of a 'Male Pillar' and a 'Female Pillar' symbolizing balance. The Male Pillar features a strong, upright design, while the Female Pillar has a gentler, more embracing shape. At night, these pillars are illuminated by LED lights, creating a mystical atmosphere.
The most striking feature is the panoramic view of the crystal-clear ocean and sky. On clear days, the sea transforms into a vibrant emerald green, providing a constantly changing landscape as you drive. The design of the main pillars is another essential element for those interested in local history. At night, the green LED lights installed in the slits of the Male Pillar light up, offering a completely different and enchanting expression compared to the daytime.
Daytime is the best time for driving, as the sunlight makes the emerald green color of the ocean appear most vivid. During the evening, you can witness the changing colors of the sky and the shifting reflections on the water's surface. The bridge also offers a unique nighttime view thanks to the LED illumination of the pillars. Please note that for safety reasons, the bridge may be subject to traffic restrictions if wind speeds exceed 20m/s.
Crossing Kouri Bridge is the primary way to access Kouri Island. Once across, you can visit Kouri Beach or the Kouri Fureai Hiroba to enjoy local specialties and relax. Since travel is primarily by car, it is common to drive with the windows down to fully immerse yourself in the sea breeze and scenery.
To the south of the bridge lies the Motobu Peninsula, and to the north is Kouri Island. The island itself is dotted with beautiful beaches and facilities where you can experience local food culture. Free parking areas, such as the Kouri Bridge South Observation Point, are available to ensure smooth travel for visitors.
Crossing the bridge is free of charge. For nearby facilities like parking lots or local restaurants, cash or credit cards (Visa/MasterCard, etc.) are generally accepted.
While some signage at nearby tourist facilities or beaches may be in English, most services and staff interactions are primarily in Japanese.
No prior reservation is required to cross the bridge, and parking is typically available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Since you will be driving and potentially visiting the beach, it is highly recommended to bring sunglasses, a hat, and plenty of water to protect against the strong sun. If you plan on activities near the water, consider bringing a change of clothes.
Photography is permitted, but for safety, please do not operate your vehicle while taking photos. Always pull over to a safe, designated area before capturing the view.
Some parking areas include spaces designated for people with disabilities. While the areas around the bridge are paved, please check local conditions regarding terrain and steps.
If wind speeds exceed 20m/s, the bridge may be closed for safety. Please follow all local traffic signs and instructions during such weather events.
