Sotani Castle Ruins is located on Mount Sotani (elevation 495.1m) in Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture. It is recognized as one of the three great medieval mountain castles and served as the stronghold for the Azai clan for three generations. Today, it is designated as a national historical site, featuring a complex structure that utilizes the natural terrain. From the ruins, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Lake Biway and the northern Kohoku region.
The history of Sotani Castle dates back to its construction around 1525. The Azai clan used this land as a base to confront surrounding powers. The site is famously known as the stage for fierce battles involving Oda Nobunaga. The fall of the castle is deeply intertwined with the tragic story of Azai Nagamasa, Lady Oichi, and the three Azai sisters (Chacha, Hatsune, and Go). Later, Hashiba (Toyotomi) Hideyoshi controlled this area, but the castle was abandoned when he built Nagahama Castle nearby. The site was designated as a national historical site in 1937.

The castle ruins feature various enclosures (kuruwa) arranged along the east and west ridges, skillfully utilizing the natural topography. Key remains include earthworks (dorui) and foundations at the Honmaru (main enclosure), Daihiro (Great Hall) site, and Ozuku. Near the summit (495m), the sophisticated earthworks demonstrate advanced medieval fortification techniques. Additionally, the Kiyomizu-dani area contains the remains of the residence where the Azai clan and their vassals lived, providing essential clues to understanding the ancient castle structure.
As a historical site, there are no official opening hours. The site is generally accessible freely throughout the day. While the structural layout can be observed in any season, it is highly recommended to visit during daylight hours due to the nature of the mountain terrain. Choosing a clear, sunny day is best to fully appreciate the changing scenery and the vast views of the surrounding landscape.

Visitors can experience the Sengoku period by walking through the actual terrain of the fortress. By following the paths of the earthworks, enclosures, and stone walls, you can trace the defensive systems and daily life of the past. From the summit, the expansive view of Lake Biwa and the Kohoku region offers a profound sense of history and scale. It is an excellent spot for learning about mountain castle architecture while enjoying nature.
At the foot of Mount Sotani, you can find the Sengok Guide Station and the remains of a Banjo (checkpoint). The surrounding area is dotted with various historical facilities and tourist spots around Lake Biwa. While rental cycles are available from Kamo Station, cycling up the forest roads of Mount Sotani is not recommended due to the steep and dangerous slopes.
Sotani Castle Ruins is a mountain site with unpaved paths and steep slopes. The terrain can be unstable in many places. Please ensure you wear comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots and appropriate outdoor clothing.
