Honda Hachiman-gu is a venerable shrine located in Habikino City, Osaka Prefecture. Revered as one of the oldest Hachiman shrines in Japan, the shrine is surrounded by much-loved natural scenery. The grounds are home to numerous important cultural properties, including a National Treasure palanquin, making it a profound place to experience the depth of Japanese history and spiritual culture.
The history of this site is exceptionally ancient. According to legend, a divine shrine was established during the era of Emperor Kinmei. Throughout history, it has been a center of faith for the warrior class, maintaining deep connections with various Shoguns and historical figures. During the Heian period, the shrine was moved to its current location. The area also shares a deep connection with Buddhist culture, evidenced by the founding of Naganoyama Gokokuji Temple during the Nara period. Although the shrine buildings faced destruction over the centuries, the current majestic structures stand as a testament to its resilience, following reconstructions by figures such as Toyotomi Hideyori.
The shrine grounds house many precious cultural assets that command awe. A primary highlight is the "Jinji Raden Kondo-so Mikoshi," a National Treasure known for its exquisite and intricate decorations. Other significant treasures include the "Paper Manuscript of Empress Jingū's Origins" and the "Silk Painting of the Hachiman Shrine Origins," as well as artifacts like Kagura masks and swords from the Kamakura period. The architectural-wise, the heavy wooden structures such as the Main Hall (rebuilt in 1606), the Middle Gate, and the Worship Hall showcase the pinnacle of traditional Japanese aesthetic beauty. Other notable features include the Hojo Bridge and stone lanterns designated by Habikino City.
The shrine offers a different beauty in every season. The periods of spring and autumn are particularly beautiful, as the harmony between the greenery and the shrine architecture creates a perfect atmosphere for visiting. During special events like the New Year's Hatsumode, visitors can experience unique traditions, such as receiving "Hinomaru Kamizake," a special sake made with local red wine. We recommend visiting during daylight hours to clearly observe the intricate details of the architecture and the vibrant colors of the cultural assets.

While there is no specific dress code, modest and respectful clothing is recommended for visiting a shrine. Please be mindful of your behavior to maintain the sanctity of the grounds.
