The Koshu Kaido Ginkgo Avenue (Route 20), located in Hachioji, Tokyo, is a magnificent avenue where approximately 700 ginkgo trees line a 4 km stretch. As autumn deepens, the leaves turn a vivid golden yellow, forming a breathtaking golden tunnel that covers both sides of the road. This iconic scenery is a celebrated symbol of the changing seasons in the region.
This avenue is situated along the Koshu Kaido, one of the five major highways established during the Edo period. Many of the ginkgo trees that make up this landscape have a deep history; many were planted in connection with the construction of the Tama Imperial Mausoleum in 1929. Over the decades, these trees have become an integral part of the local landscape and are now a major destination for viewing autumn colors.
The primary attraction is the 4 km long golden tunnel created by the ginkgo trees. From mid-November to early December, the leaves reach their most brilliant yellow hue, creating a canopy that seems to cover the sky. On clear sunny days, the sunlight reflects off the leaves, creating a dazzling display alongside the golden carpet of fallen leaves on the ground. Occasionally, light-up events are held at night, offering a completely different, magical atmosphere compared to the daytime.
The best time to visit is from mid-November to early December when the yellow color is at its most intense. During sunny daytime hours, the light enhances the brilliance of the leaves, making it an ideal environment for walking or cycling. If there are night-time illuminations scheduled, the golden trees illuminated by lights provide a stunning sight against the night sky.
The avenue is used for walking, cycling, and driving. You can enjoy a peaceful stroll or a bike ride while immersed in the golden scenery under the mild autumn weather. During the peak foliage season, local events may also take place, sometimes featuring food stalls or musical performances, adding to the festive atmosphere.
The location is relatively easy to access from central Tokyo, making it suitable for a day trip. The surrounding area offers various spots to experience nature and local culture, characterized by the beautiful seasonal changes of the landscape.
As this is an outdoor avenue, please dress appropriately for the season. During the autumn foliage season, be prepared for dropping temperatures. Since the avenue is a public road (Route 20), please stay extremely cautious of vehicles while walking or cycling. When taking photographs, please ensure you do not obstruct traffic or pedestrians.
