The Konosu Fireworks Festival is a large-scale fireworks event held in Konosu City, Saitama Prefecture. What makes this festival truly unique is its community-driven spirit. Rather than being a government-led event, it is organized entirely by the 'Konosu City Chamber of Commerce Youth Division.' This group of local young professionals manages everything from planning and operations to the post-event cleanup. This '100% handmade' approach, involving about 30 dedicated members, represents a precious tradition of local community engagement. The night sky is illuminated by approximately 20,000 fireworks, creating a vibrant and unforgettable spectacle.
The festival has grown from the activities of the local Chamber of Commerce Youth Division, a group of young people supporting the region's commerce and industry. It has a deep-rooted history of community-based development, starting with members visiting local businesses one by one to gather support. Beyond being just a spectacle, it serves as a vital cultural event that strengthens community bonds and passes hopes for the next generation, making it a beloved tradition for many years.
The greatest highlight is the sheer volume of the display, with roughly 20,000 fireworks lighting up the sky. Special attention is given to the powerful 'Sho-shikudama' (large-caliber shells) and spectacular performances aimed at breaking or challenging Guinness World Records, such as the number of consecutive launches within three minutes. Additionally, the event often features dynamic aerial displays like the Blue Impulse aerobatic team, offering a multi-layered spectacle of light and motion that sets it apart from standard fireworks displays.
The festival is held on the first Saturday of October every year. Because it takes place in the clear, crisp air of autumn, the colors of the fireworks appear exceptionally vivid and sharp. The display is scheduled to begin around 17:30. As the sun sets and the darkness deepens, the atmosphere builds with excitement. Since it is held in October, it is highly recommended to prepare for the cooling temperatures to enjoy the transition from twilight to night perfectly.
Visitors can enjoy different levels of immersion depending on their viewing area. Reserved paid seating or sponsor seats allow you to feel the intense sound and light much more closely. The event captures the traditional Japanese transition from late summer to autumn, where the crowd and the atmosphere become one with the massive-scale fireworks. Depending on the year's program, you may also experience highly synchronized music and light displays.
The venue is the Nukata athletic field and the Arakawa riverbed in Konosu City, Saitama. The wide-open riverbed provides a vast space for viewing the massive display. While the surrounding area becomes lively with food stalls and shops during the event, please note that it becomes extremely crowded. We recommend allowing plenty of time for travel and movement around the area.
As temperatures can drop significantly at night in October, please bring a warm jacket or extra layers. Since the viewing area is on a riverbed, comfortable walking shoes suitable for uneven ground are highly recommended.
